Having trouble with radiator install. Are these brackets installed upside down?

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Bought a PCV6 kit and noticed similarities with installed stuff in undocumented Saab 9-5 2002 Auto.  I'm wondering if this PM measure was already done. I hope Saabnet posters will chime in to tell me I'm upgrading something that has already been upgraded, saving me some knuckle-busting.

1st hint was the Oil filler replacement matched the installed unit:

Here is a view from the top with the oil filler removed:
The kit included a foam wrap with nylon ties. Saw evidence of this from the bottom view:

I have no idea if this means the upgrade is done or not. If you can tell from the pictures and let me know, I'd appreciate it.

New fun tonight as we tried to drop the Inter-cooler. Followed wrong directions on removing front bumper (a 5 minute job, supposedly) and didn't get much past that. Discovered new-fangled electrical clip connections are brittle with the last harness connection to bumper. Is there an easy fix to a broken harness clip?

Discovered extensive rust behind front bumper. Will grind and seal before replacing bumper.

Saabnet.com posters were curious about other end of Turbo. Here's a pic. I may take it apart to inspect the entrails after we get this on the road.

Dropped the oil pan

The turbo actually arrived today, but awaiting the arrival of other parts we decided to drop the oil pan. Not a fun process ,but created a feeling of relief.  before and after pictures follow. For lack of other cleaning solvents I used Kingsford lighter fluid, paper towels, rags and steel wool. It is not pristine, but is better than before (which wasn't bad).

We pulled out the Turbo and it suffered catastrophic failure (see pic). Trying to figure out what else to do while we wait for parts to arrive.

List of potential projects:
Oil pan drop to check for sludge
PCV6 kit
Clean out Inter-cooler
Clean out throttle-body
Re-torque head bolts

Fortunately, coolant came out clear and no evidence of coolant in oil. There is, however, evidence of oil in cylinders. Crankcase bypass valve seems intact and no evidence of oil around plugs under DI cassette. Concerned about:

  • How to clean inter-cooler of oil
  • How to assure cylinders with oil presence will recover without intervention (will it just burn off through use, or should I do something?)
Any thoughts are welcome (follow threads initiated by TRJ on http//www.saabnet.com in the 9-5 bulletin board section: http://saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9-5/

This blog has been been created to document an attempt to repair an ailing 2002 Saab Linear. At 84K miles it produced large plumes of smoke out of the tailpipe. This blog is currently a holding place for photos to be referenced from Saabnet.com bulletin boards. Hopefully, we will be able to trace the cause to effect to solution over the course of this project to aid others who might face a similar fate.

Initial indications came on fast: blue smoke in exhaust. Local mechanic found evidence of oil in cylinders and presumed head/gasket issues. Coolant does not show oil, nor does oil show coolant. I think turbo failed and blew oil into crankcase. Other option is Crankcase ventilation issue, but no oil under DI cassette to so indicate.
